Emily Rowan (1925-2017) had a passion for music and great literature and she passed both on to her five children who all graduated from Edmonton Catholic Schools. Raising her children alone after the death of her husband in 1969, she encouraged a love of learning and the pursuit of higher education and was proud of the accomplishments of all her children and her grandchildren. Emily earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the age of 69 after she retired from her career in the medical records office of the Cross Cancer Institute. This was a particularly proud accomplishment as she was only able to go to school sporadically until the age of 12 because of responsibilities at her childhood home farm outside of Vilna, Alberta.
Emily appreciated music and she and all her children took piano lessons, sang in choirs and studied other instruments as well. She believed that all youth should have opportunities to explore their musical talents through their school music programs and that these programs should strive for excellence. She was a great reader who believed in the benefits of appreciating a good book and that excellent library resources in schools will foster the joy of reading in students.
